The Cobb County community is awaiting answers following a fatal officer-involved shooting that claimed the life of Rowdy G. Hill after a traffic stop escalated into a vehicle pursuit, crash, and armed standoff on Friday night, June 5, 2026.
According to the Cobb County Police Department, the incident began at approximately 10:22 p.m. when uniformed patrol officers attempted to stop a Cadillac SUV after observing it being driven recklessly along Windy Hill Road.
Authorities said the driver failed to stop and instead fled from officers, leading police on a pursuit through the area. Officers involved in the chase were operating marked patrol vehicles with emergency lights and sirens activated.
The pursuit came to a dramatic end when the Cadillac reportedly lost control and overturned near a residence on Windy Hill Road west of Osborne Court.
Police stated that after the crash, the driver remained inside the overturned SUV and refused repeated commands from officers to exit the vehicle. Investigators reported that the situation quickly escalated into an armed standoff.
According to law enforcement officials, the driver was armed with a firearm and allegedly discharged the weapon during the encounter. Officers at the scene subsequently returned fire.
Authorities further stated that the driver later attempted to exit the overturned vehicle while still armed, at which point an officer fired, striking him.
The driver was later identified by family members and loved ones as Rowdy G. Hill. He died from injuries sustained during the incident.
No officers were injured during the confrontation.
The shooting prompted a significant emergency response in the area, including the deployment of SWAT personnel following reports of shots fired. Residents nearby reported a heavy law enforcement presence as officers worked to secure the scene and bring the situation under control.
As required in officer-involved shootings, the investigation has been turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is conducting an independent review of the incident.
Investigators are expected to examine evidence from the scene, review body-camera footage and other recordings, interview witnesses, and determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal encounter.
