CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Murphysboro and Carbondale communities are expressing shock and concern following the reported death of 18-year-old Jayaire M. Gibbs, who was fatally injured in a recent shooting incident under investigation by Carbondale Police.
According to authorities, officers responded on June 6 to the 600 block of South Forest Street after reports of a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, police identified the victim as Jayaire M. Gibbs, 18, of Murphysboro. He had sustained a gunshot wound during what investigators believe was a dispute among acquaintances at a gathering.
Emergency responders transported Gibbs for medical attention after the incident, but officials have confirmed the severity of the situation as the investigation continues. The suspect reportedly fled the scene before officers arrived and has not yet been located.
Police say the shooting appears to be an isolated incident, and there is currently no indication of a broader threat to the public. However, investigators are continuing to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and review information in order to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The tragedy comes amid a series of recent violent incidents in the Carbondale area. Earlier in the week, officers also responded to a separate shooting on South Beveridge Street involving a group of juveniles, though no injuries were reported in that case.
News of Jayaire Gibbs’ death has left family members, friends, and community members devastated. Tributes have begun to circulate as loved ones remember him as a young man whose life ended far too soon, leaving behind grief and unanswered questions.
Community members in Murphysboro and Carbondale are now calling for peace and unity as authorities continue their investigation.
At this time, police have not released additional details regarding a suspect or possible charges, and the case remains active and ongoing.
Funeral and memorial arrangements for Jayaire M. Gibbs are expected to be announced by the family at a later date.
The investigation continues.
