LAS ANIMAS, Colo. — Funeral services are currently pending following the passing of Jordan Matthew Melendez, a 32-year-old Las Animas resident whose death on June 3, 2026, has left family members, friends, students, and the wider community heartbroken.

Melendez was born on November 10, 1993, in La Junta, Colorado, and was raised in Las Animas, where he graduated from Las Animas High School in the Class of 2012.

A Life of Service and Dedication

Following high school, Melendez enlisted in the Naval Reserves, demonstrating his commitment to service and country. Throughout his life, he continued to dedicate himself to helping others through multiple roles, including working with the Colorado Department of Corrections and serving as a jailer with the Bent County Sheriff’s Office.

He later returned to his hometown school district, where he worked as a paraprofessional at Las Animas High School, continuing his passion for supporting and guiding young people.
